THE TRIP AT A GLANCE
Day 1 Land at the harbour (The Rocks, Circular Quay, an easy first dinner)
Day 2 Opera House precinct, botanic garden, dinner inside the landmark
Day 3 Paddington and Woollahra, a Bondi long lunch, coastal walk
Day 4 Your big day out (cruise, helicopter or Blue Mountains)

Day 1: Arrive and Walk to the Harbour

  • Arrival: Check in, then head straight to the water. Walk The Rocks laneways and sandstone streets, then continue to Circular Quay for the Opera House and the harbour-front promenade.
  • Evening: Pick a first-night table that feels easy but still polished: The Glenmore Hotel (classic Rocks rooftop), Saké Restaurant & Bar (reliable, lively, built for a first night) or The Dining Room at Park Hyatt Sydney (a quieter, hotel-led evening with harbour views).
  • Late: One drink at Maybe Sammy (high-service cocktails with a bit of theatre) or The Doss House (darker, moodier and close to home).
  • Insider move: Go early at The Glenmore for a good table, and keep tonight light. You have three more days.

Day 2: Opera House Precinct and CBD Classics

  • Breakfast: The Grounds of the City, a Sydney institution (go early to avoid the queue). For a stronger coffee-and-pastry morning, AP Bakery in Surry Hills is worth the detour.
  • Morning: Start at the Museum of Contemporary Art while it's quiet, then walk the foreshore towards the Opera House and Mrs Macquarie's Chair for the best harbour angles.
  • Midday: Long lunch at Cafe Sydney (Customs House, harbour views, long-lunch energy), or Shell House in the CBD for a more city-led lunch in a stylish room.
  • Afternoon: Keep it simple with a garden walk at the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney, then back to the hotel for a reset.
  • Pre-dinner: Opera Bar as an aperitif stop.
  • Evening: Bennelong, dining inside the landmark, done well.
  • Insider move: Arrive early at Opera Bar for a good seat.

Day 3: Paddington, Woollahra and Bondi

  • Breakfast: Bills in Darlinghurst (a classic for a reason) or Single O in Surry Hills (serious coffee, no fuss).
  • Morning: Paddington and Woollahra are Sydney's best browsing territory: galleries, boutiques and design stores. Walk Oxford Street (Paddington end) and the side streets. If it's Saturday, add Paddington Markets for a quick loop, then move on.
  • Midday: Make lunch the main event: Icebergs Dining Room and Bar (book a window table if you can), Sean's Panorama (seasonal, coastal and quietly excellent) or North Bondi Fish (more relaxed, still feels like Sydney).
  • Afternoon: The Bondi to Bronte coastal walk is short, scenic and easy to time. Push on to Coogee if you're feeling energetic. Add a swim if the weather's right, otherwise keep it to the walk and a coffee.
  • Evening: Back to base to change, then dinner at Ester (Chippendale, modern Australian and confident), Cho Cho San (Potts Point, stylish and energetic) or Mr. Wong (CBD, big-room Cantonese for a lively night).
  • After dinner: Maybe Sammy if you skipped it on Day 1, or a harbour-front walk back through Circular Quay.
  • Insider move: Book the Icebergs window table first. Everything else flexes around it.

Day 4: Choose Your Big Day Out

Pick one and build the day around it.

  • Option A, Sunset Dinner Cruise (evening): Plan this as your final-night centrepiece. Start with a Barangaroo foreshore walk and a gallery stop (the MCA, if you skipped it), keep lunch light and early, then reset at the hotel before the cruise. Book the Sydney Harbour Sunset Dinner Cruise.
  • Option B, Helicopter Flight (daytime): Short, high-impact and genuinely memorable. Breakfast in The Rocks, morning flight, then a harbour-side lunch. Spend the afternoon on shopping and design time in the CBD or Paddington. Book the Sydney Harbour Helicopter Flight.
  • Option C, Blue Mountains Small-Group Day Tour (full day): A full day out of the city with minimal planning. Early breakfast, tour day, then a quick reset and dinner close to The Rocks. Bring a light layer, as temperatures can shift quickly. Book the Blue Mountains Small-Group Day Tour.
  • Final night: Keep it local with Saké (The Rocks) or head over to Pier Bar & Dining. If you chose the cruise, dinner is on the water.
  • Last drink: A final cocktail in The Rocks, then a walk back via Circular Quay after dark.
  • Insider move: Choose one big day, not two. Sydney is best paced, not crammed.

BOOK-AHEAD CHECKLIST
Hotel The Shangri-la Sydney. Lock this in first, as everything else is built around it.
Dinners Quay or Bennelong, and Ester. Harbour-view tables go first, so reserve them before anything else.
Long lunch Icebergs Dining Room and Bar. Ask for a window table.
Big day out Choose one: the cruise, the helicopter flight or the Blue Mountains tour. Book before you arrive.

PLAN B
Rain Skip the coastal walk. Keep the long lunch at Bondi and spend the afternoon in Paddington's galleries.
Want more buzz Base in Surry Hills or Potts Point instead and keep the same rhythm.
Lower budget Keep the harbour walks, the botanic garden and the coastal walk. Choose one special dinner and make the other nights casual.
Too much on Day Four Choose the helicopter flight. It's the shortest of the three options.

The Wrap-Up

Sydney's best days aren't the ones you cram full. They're the ones you pace properly. Start with an easy morning in the city (coffee first, always), then let the day drift between neighbourhood favourites, harbour views and those small "only in Sydney" moments you stumble into between stops.

Save this itinerary for later, and pick your base depending on whether you want buzz or calm. Leave a few gaps for spontaneous detours.

Concierge note: Hours, prices, menus and availability change seasonally. Confirm directly with each venue or operator before you go.
